Dan Roy

Dan Roy is a Research Scientist at the MIT Teaching Systems Lab and the founder of Skylight Games. At TSL, he is imagining how playful experiences can help teachers explore a range of competencies, including understanding student preconceptions, using rubrics to evaluate student work, and learning to collaborate with fellow teachers. Through TSL’s partnership with the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, he’s imagining how to make their new teacher prep academy more playful, personalized, and collaborative. He’s exploring the affordances of VR and AI in learning games, but is just as happy designing board and card games. Dan has design learning games since 2002 across history, math, science, language, and teacher prep. His most recently released game, Lyriko, won 9 awards, including the Verizon Foundation’s Apps for Class Challenge and Best Learning Game at the Boston Festival of Indie Games. Dan has an SM in Comparative Media Studies from MIT and a BS in Computer Science from UMass Amherst.
